Hello! I’m a Los Angeles native photojournalist and visual artist. I love telling stories about the culture, through music, sports, science and politics. Coming from a mixed background, I am attracted to stories about people straddling different identities.
I graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where I majored in neuroscience and minored in music. I also worked as a DJ and was a campus and community leader and member of Kappa Alpha Psi.
After college, I was a biomedical researcher in a group designing targeted cancer drugs and analyzing neurosurgical outcomes. Some our research is published in peer reviewed journals like Cancer Research and Journal of Neurosurgery.
My aesthetic is influenced by my intersectional experiences in science and art. As a photojournalist, I strive to capture the truth — just as a scientist does. Through careful curiosity and thoughtful exploration I hope to capture and share stories in a universal visual language.
My work has been recognized by Society of Professional Journalists, Journalism Association of Community Colleges, and The College Media Association, Los Angeles Press Club, FStoppers and more.
My work has been exhibited in the Barrett Art Gallery, and the California Heritage Museum, both in Santa Monica.
I’ve had photographs and articles published in local, national and international outlets including ESPN, Fox Sports, The Los Angeles Sentinel, The Sacramento Observer, The Christian Science Monitor, The Atlanta Voice, and The San Francisco Bay View.
I am currently open for assignments, reach out to me at ME@MaxElram.com so I can tell your story.
